Match Engine in Football Agent

2D simulation, live commentary, and development impact

Last updated:

This page documents the match engine in Football Agent based on community observation.

2D match engine overview

Football Agent features a 2D top-down match engine in which your clients’ matches are simulated. You can watch matches live, fast-forward through them, or use full simulation to skip to the result.

The match engine is not a tactical tool — you have no control over team selection, tactics, or in-match decisions. It is a simulation designed to show you the results of your clients’ careers.

Match view

When watching a match, you see:

  • A 2D pitch with player positions updating in real time.
  • A running text commentary log below the pitch.
  • A statistics panel for your client showing touches, passes, shots, and key events.
  • The current score and match time.

The match engine runs approximately 3–5 in-game minutes per real-world second, depending on hardware.

Live text commentary

Text commentary provides a narrative layer over the raw 2D simulation. Key events narrated include:

  • Shots on goal (and whether they were taken by your client).
  • Assists.
  • Goals scored (and credited to the correct player).
  • Defensive actions.
  • Fouls and bookings.
  • Half-time and full-time results.

Community note: Day-1 players reported bugs in the initial launch commentary system, including assists appearing in 0-0 draws and nonsensical defensive sequences. The developers released a hotfix addressing these issues within the first two days of Early Access.

Match statistics

At the end of each match, you receive a full statistical breakdown for your client:

  • Minutes played.
  • Goals and assists.
  • Pass completion percentage.
  • Shots (on and off target).
  • Tackles and interceptions.
  • Any awards (Man of the Match, etc.).

These statistics are stored and visible in the player’s career history.

Impact on player development

Match performance directly affects a player’s development trajectory:

  • Playing time — the single most important development factor. A player starting every match develops significantly faster than one on the bench.
  • Performance level — strong individual performances (goals, assists, clean sheets) provide a small additional development boost.
  • Match intensity — playing in higher-tier leagues provides a slightly higher development multiplier.

The developers’ hotfix (August 2026) significantly reduced development speed for players on full investment, requiring 6+ seasons of regular football to reach full potential rather than the original 3 seasons.

Match impact on morale

Match results affect client morale:

  • Winning — positive morale impact for all players in the squad, especially strong for your client if they contributed.
  • Losing — negative morale impact, more severe if your client was at fault for key goals.
  • Individual performance — strong personal performance mitigates morale damage from losing. Poor personal performance amplifies it.
  • Team role vs promise — if the player is playing less than promised, morale suffers even in winning matches.

Fast simulation

Fast simulation allows you to skip through match weeks without watching matches in real time. In fast simulation mode:

  • All matches still occur and affect player development and morale.
  • You receive a summary result for each match (score, goals, assists) but no detailed commentary.
  • You can still perform other agency tasks between simulation steps.

Fast simulation is recommended once you have established your agency and want to progress through seasons more quickly. When reviewing a new high-potential signing, watch their first few matches in real time to assess their integration before switching to fast simulation.

Match engine and game bugs

Community-tracked match engine issues from Early Access launch:

  • Offside bug (fixed) — initial reports of frequent incorrect offside decisions. Fixed in Day-1 hotfix.
  • Assist bug (fixed) — assists appearing in 0-0 draws. Fixed in Day-1 hotfix.
  • Defensive AI (improved) — early reports of defensive units not functioning correctly. Improved in subsequent hotfix.

All known match engine bugs have been addressed in hotfixes released within the first 48 hours of Early Access launch.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I control tactics or team selection in the match engine?

No. Football Agent is not a match management game. The match engine is a passive simulation showing your clients' careers. You have no in-match control.

Do all my clients' matches play simultaneously?

Matches are scheduled by the game calendar. You can watch one match live at a time. Other clients' matches occur in the background and you receive a summary result.

How does the 2D engine handle stadium or weather conditions?

These factors are simulated but do not have major gameplay impact in the current Early Access version. The engine focuses on player performance and career narrative rather than environmental simulation.
